Discussion Post: What Are Your Favorite Gay-Themed Movies?

I know this is different from my normal posts, but I’m always on the look out for quality gay cinema and there’s so many gay people that visit this site I figured you guys would have some good recommendations and I could share some of my favorites with you (some well known, others not). Let me know what you think! I’ve embedded links in the images so if you’re interested in purchasing any of the films I mentioned you can.
This is definitely my favorite gay movie–ever. I think I wouldn’t even pigeonhole it and say it’s one of my favorite gay movies, but just one of my favorite romantic comedies. It features an affable Alexis Arquette (when she was still a he) and a very attractive Christian Maelen as two best friends whose relationship instantly deteriorates when Alexis’ character admits he has feelings for his straight friend. Years later Alexis marries a well known soap star (lol played by Tuc Watkins–the irony) who is a nice guy but he isn’t Brendan (his friend). The whole gang of friends is brought back together by a wedding and that’s when Brendan shows up with a surprise that shocks everyone and leaves Alexis’ character with a difficult choice. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it’s Four Weddings and a Funeral meets My Best Friend’s Wedding with a gay twist.
Breakfast With Scot is a movie about a suburban gay couple who ends up having to take care of a young boy whom one half of the gay couple’s brother fathered–after the boy’s mother passes away. The brother never knew he had a son, and cannot be located so the boy goes to the next of kin. Problem is, Scot grew up with only his mother so the boy is very feminine and flamboyant, and doesn’t realize that this is strange to other people. One of the men is a former hockey player and now sportscaster who is very in the closet due to his job, and Scot’s “gay” antics embarrass him. Throughout the course of the film he and his partner struggle with learning to deal with being parents for the first time as well as how to love Scot and themselves.
This great movie that dramatizes the events surrounding the Stonewall Riots (if you’re gay and don’t know what this is–WIKIPEDIA IT RIGHT NOW!!) centers around a young guy from the south (Fred Weller–cute guy from In Plain Sight) who comes to New York City and meets a drag queen played by Guillermo Diaz (played Guillermo on Weeds) who sort of introduces him to the gay nightlife of the city and helps him find acceptance and a home when he had none at all. The entire movie leads up to the riots themselves, and the movie ends both triumphantly and tragically for many different characters.
This is the closest I’ve ever seen to a gay version of the female ensemble sisterhood movies like Steel Magnolias, Boys On The Side, Now & Then, etc. It’s not the best film but it’s fun and romantic and shows gay men in a variety of different lights. It’s certainly a lot less insulting than stuff like Queer As Folk or Noah’s Arc (which I admit are both two of my guilty pleasures). It stars Dean Cain (Lois & Clark), Andrew Keegan, Zach Braff, Timothy Olymphant–among others star in this romantic comedy about friends and lovers.
For some reason this got a rap for being a gritty serious drama during the awards season but if you’ve seen the movie you know it’s actually a light-hearted (for the most part) hilarious road-trip movie about a mother connecting with a son she never knew she had, while learning to feel comfortable in her own skin. Felicity Huffman from Desperate Housewives gives an Oscar worthy performance (still pissed Reese Witherspoon stole it from her!), and Kevin Zegers is charming and gorgeous as her son.
So, if you’ve ever heard of the play, read the play, seen the play, you know that Tony Kusher who wrote it is absolutely brilliant. The film version which stars Justin Kirk, Mary Louise Parker, Adam Shenkman, Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, Meryl Streep, and the fabulous Jeffrey Wright as the gay nurse Belize all make this movie about a group of people affected by the AIDS crisis in the 80s worth the 6 hour watch.
How many of you knew the director of the classic film Frankenstein was gay? Yep, he was. And was openly gay during a time when homosexuality was incredibly taboo and always concealed. This critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated movie stars Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser and chronicles the final days of the genius behind the film and the very sexy man who was his muse. May not be your thing if you’re not into art house films–but at the very least Brendan Fraser looks really good in it!
Heartbreaking film about a soldier who unexpectedly falls in love with a transgendered woman, and the fallout from their relationship. The film is based on the story of very well known trans-woman Calpernia Addams whom you might remember from her dating show on Logo.

I want to see Soldier’s Girl really bad. It stars that guy from Pushing Daisies (which was a really good tv show until they cancelled it). I’ve seen previews and pictures of it and it looks really good.
I’ve only seen the last part of The Broken Hearts Club and it seem pretty interesting. It was on HBO when I saw it and it hasn’t played again since. As much as I can say, Dean Cain will always and forever be my Superman… next to Brandon Routh at least… actually, Christopher Reeve is my favorite Superman.
One of my favorite gay movies is Latter Days, starring Steve Sandvoss and Wes Ramsey. I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of it because there was a lot of backlash to that movie. My Mormon friend who is straight was offended by the movie but yet she was still one of my best friends so I didn’t understand that concept. But what’s really good about the movie is the soundtrack to the movie. Rebekah Jordan I believe had her big break due to this movie. 3 am is one of my favorite songs of all time.
My other favorite movie is Trick. It’s so funny, sweet, and a great romantic comedy. It stars Christian Campbell (Neve Campbell’s brother and also he’s the star of my other favorite movies Reefer Madness the re-make), J.P. Pitoc and the lovely Tori Spelling as Christian Campbell’s fag hag. It starts out pretty slow in the beginning but really picks up and never lets out until the end which was really awesome. It’s basically about 2 guys that are trying to get laid but can never find a place to. It seems stereotypical for a gay movie but it actually turns that stereotype to a different level. I don’t know about other people but I love Trick. =)

Parting Glances. One of the first gay flicks I saw that did not try and shock an audience. It stood on its own with gay characters, their straight friends, and people dealing with love, loss, friendship, old and new relationships. Filmed in the 80s, watching it now can also show how far we’ve come and how things haven;t changed at all yet. Still one of my favorite movies. Plus you see some actors in some of their early work including Steve Buscemi and Kathy Kinney.

I’m so happy you know about Angels in America, a lot of people don’t or won’t watch it b/c it’s 6 hours long, but it is sssoooo worth it. Broken Hearts, and Soldier’s Girl are also on my list. Also the 24th day with Scott Speedman and James Marsden is amazing. Latter Days about a gay mormon and such is really good, Maurice, A Merchant Ivory Story is good but slow in that Merchant Ivory fashion, and let’s not forget Brokeback Mountain lol. Lilies is another good one. Touch of Pink is ok, pretty funny. Beautiful Thing is really good and really sweet about first love. I’ll post again if I think of more.

Have seen Angels in America at least three times on DVD and once in the theatre – not just about us gays, but god and governments too. Epic.
Also, kudos to whoever recommended Almodovar (All About My Mother is def best).
Brokeback, Beautiful Thing, Hedwig.
But the best – and just a plain fantastic movie – was Mysterious Skin, which left me in a pile on the floor.

I agree, Mysterious Skin was a very good one as well, and I too have seen Angels multiple times, I have the dvd and watch it when I can. Speaking of Hedwig (which I haven’t seen yet actually) the director of that did a new one recently called Shortbus, very very graphic sexually, but a really good and interesting story to it too I think. Also Bent, a movie about gays during the holocaust staring Clive Owen is a good one. And A Home At the End of the World with Colin Ferrell is one that I like a lot even though I don’t think a lot of people will. I find his performance in it to be very remarkable!

lol and I almost forgot Urbania and The Bird’s Cage (can’t believe no one’s said that one yet, funniest thing ever!) Both of these movies feature Dan Futterman who I think is just totally adorable! Urbania can be tough to follow, but you have to watch it and pay attention, it’s worth it. Also check out Y Tu Mama Tambien. While it’s not a “gay” movie, the shocking (depending on who you ask I guess lol) gay themed ending to it is well well well worth it!!! Thanx for the comment, Chris. Glad I’m not alone on the Home issue, I should read the book lol!

Torch Song Trilogy is amazing – Anne Bancroft deserved an Oscar for her Jewish mother role…plus it’s like 3 movies in one. Also, Beautiful Thing is a wonderfully touching coming of age movie, set in London. Lost Language of Cranes is also enlightening – father & son both come out at the same time.

I have NEVER posted before, but had to share my fav movies. Apart from the gorgeous Beautiful Thing and Maurice, there are three other British films that are must-sees: Get Real (a coming out/coming of age story), Bedrooms and Hallways (fantastic movie about shifting sexual desires – gay, straight, bi) and Different for Girls (about a trans woman who reunites with her best friend from high school – with a twist). And as an Aussie, I have to plug our really great gay movies too. Head On, with Alex Dimitriades, is probably my absolutate favourite – about the complications of being gay in a Greek community in Melbourne. Very gritty. Pulls no punches. The Sum of Us is an early Russel Crowe movie – he’s a gay son living with his very accepting dad (Jack Thompson) in Sydney. Very sweet. And Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – how could no one mention this fabulous romp through the outback?

personally my favourite movie happens to be a gay movie starring Heather Graham and Tom Cavanaugh in Gray Matters.
It’s about a brother and sister, Sam (Cavanaugh) and Gray (Graham) who live together in Manhattan and have the closest relationship ever. It has loads of references to old movies which I LOVE! Anyhoo… Sam meets this WONDERFUL girl named Charlie and they decide to get married after their first date which is an all-nighter. Gray ends up sharing a passionate kiss with a drunk Charlie and falls in love. She has never before realized she was gay until now.
It’s a great movie about self-discovery and independence. i love it.

were the world mine, really campy..but its adapted from mid summers night dream and it has the crazy lady with an eye patch from twin peaks in it..so it has to be good.
taking woodstock is centered around the guy who locally backed the woodstock festival and helped plan it to some degree and hes gay in the movie.
velvet goldmine is about the alleged fling between david bowie and iggy pop..its really disjointed and more about glam rock than the gay community but its still cute!
together is a swedish movie about a hippie commune in stockholm during the 70’s. has a gay romantic subplot, one of my all time favorites of movies in general..he also does fucking amal but thats about lesbians(its still good though..haha)
edge of 17 is REALLY good i cant believe nobody said anything about it yet..its gay coming of age story in the new wave era of the 80’s
all the quentin crisp movies, but honestly the books are way better..he has a really interesting take on gay guys that makes a lot of sense in terms of my generation (im 20)

I don’t know if I should mention “Juurikasvua/Rootgrownt” because it’s a tv movie with no English subs but if you happen to speak Finnish than this is a must see. It’s a comedy about selfishness in a relationship. A Helsinki based couple, Ricu and Mika move to the country side so Mika can have his own medical practice. More times than not gay themed movies suck….bad plots, over acting and bad cimimatography. The best in my estimation, and I have bveen in the business for over 23 years, are: Gods and Monsters, The History Boys(brillant) and Angels in America. These are top quality films and they don’t pander to a gay audience. Oh, how could I forget KINKY BOOTS, the guy who plays the transvestite is beyond brillant…his was a master role. The ending is great fun. so, there are four worth watching while not insulting your intelligence.
Oh, the guy in Soldiers Girl is Jane Fonda’s son.

“More times than not gay themed movies suck….bad plots, over acting and bad cimimatography.”
Right, which is why I wanted to make this post so people could recommend each other good ones.

MILK was good but not earth shattering. I knew Harvey Milk when I lived in San Francisco and the portrayl was somewhat off…which is cinematic license but the film missed the target from when it all happened.

Shelter, without a doubt wins it for me. Nice and refreshing to see a story without any of the stereotypes so predominant in the gay/lesbian genre.

Firstly i love films. I’m a film major and just love watching them, but nothing tops a gay film, since hehe, i’m gay. I really enjoy foreign gay films though. I.E. Summer Storm, Burnt Money, Hitory Boys&Get Real(notsomuchforeign), Come Undone, Wild Reeds, Three Dancing Slaves (anything with Stéphane Rideau), Blue Bird. But my favourite gay film has to be Brokeback Mountain, without a doubt. Though i would have appreciated some more simple, intimate moments between the two, like stolen kiss, gazing, touching.

I was wondering if anyone would mention Come Undone. I own that movie, but haven’t watched it in a long time just b/c I’ve been reading so so so much in my many Lit classes that I don’t feel like doing subtitles. I can’t remember if I liked it as a movie, or if I just loved the hot and graphic beach scene. lol But you’re the first I’ve seen post this one so good on ya!

I’m consistently surprised to see people always list Latter Days as one of their favorite gay films, as I truly thought it was one of the worst movies I’ve EVER seen lol. What did people like about it? Steve Sandvoss’ tight ass?

i have to agree burnt money is a great film, but a great eye opening film is xxy which is an Argentinian film about an inter-sex person who is trying to discover what to become. It is great and a real change from the normal comedy style gay films.

Here is my take on Brokeback Mountain. I told the director that it was a fraud, in my estimation, because in order for there to be a romantic sequence, the principal actor had to die and in a violent manner. Knowing Hollywood and its homophobic nature behind closed doors, it is the only way to introduce such a mainstream gay themed film and justify the romantic nature of the movie. It is wrong. you can have two guys or two women falling in love, without one of them being offed to justify a gay themed movie. Hollywood is all about the bottom line and gay movies have a rough go. MILK was a movie about a viable movement but the good guy got killed…think about it…
To answer a comment about “latter Days”…it was popular because the guys were hot. The plot was not special and weak, it was all about the eye candy.

One of my favorite which nobody mentioned was Mambo Italiano. Its cute and funny, the story of a Italian guy who deals with coming out to his traditional Italian family.
