Bravo! This is what they need to put out there more in the mainstream media, not just big actors winning awards for movies of importance. I disagree that tolerance has become an American value.. its not there yet, but I hope its on its way. Also I think some of these people were more uncomfortable with public affection, not that it was between two gay guys (though they didnt contrast that point with the str8 couple, odd). Personally, I dont like extreme public displays of affection from ANYONE. Yeah, hugging, holding hands, light kissing thats great.. but please dont have major tonsil hockey in front of me lol
PS. Thanks Chris for putting up other good stuff besides great porn

I am very glad to see that some one is putting these issues to light. I live in orange county NY and one night on my 4th year anniversary my exboyfriend and i went to diner. Shortly after receiving flowers a “hetero” couple made a complaint. Not only was i kicked out but two weeks later my ex ran into the guy who made the complaint at his place of work. they got into a verbal dissagreement, next thing i know i get a phone call from the hospital stating that my B/F had passed away while in a minor coma.

*hugs Joel* I’m sorry sweetie, I lost my ex too though not as tragically. I live in Florida, and I also grew up some in rural Alabama, so I find it a big surprise and shocking that such levels of intolerance exist in the more metropolitan north. People think that intolerance is a fault of rural America. Its not, its just more obvious there.. its an American fault period.

As a gay black man, I am both disturbed and inspired by these two videos! The first kinda gives me some hope that people are starting to come around and beginning to witness our struggle. The second one though is not at all surprising to myself. I mean, what the store clerk was saying was a bit much but i understand it. I’ve been profiled for going in a store that people believed i couldn’t afford. I’m a 21 year old black man who makes over six figures a year with no kids, or spouse to support. I dress well (w/e that’s suppose to mean), and speak eloquently. And yet if i walk into a higher end store i am followed, or watched or even questioned, and rushed alot of time. Usually I just leave, not worth my money. And on occasion i’ll complain. What they should do is do an experiment on restaurant treatment of african americans. I used to be a server, and i find that black tables aren’t wanted because it’s believed that black people do not tip as well. I find racism atleast once a day. Usually more! But i could say the same with homophobia!

I was so shocked at all the people who defended the couple, especially because they were in Jersey. attitudes towards gays are changing. They’ll always be a few ignorant jackasses, but for everyone one there is ten more people who are willing to live and let live.
BTW I love What Would You Do. Its a show that represents the goodness that STILL exists in people.

A Stephen Colbert sized Tip of the Hat to Chris for keeping this site both entertaining and important with all of these posts. And I have to agree w/ PJ on this one big time, intolerance is def not something that’s sequestered to rural areas. It just seems like that because it happens more openly in those places. Same way that racism does. But yes, in more affluent areas, things like homophobia and racism still exist, they’re just usually more subversive in those ares. Usually being the key word there though.

I just wanted to say that I think your site is amazing, the support given by complete strangers in what could be deemed a potentially dangerous environment was really touching… I left my small hometown because it was difficult to be “ME”… I returned there just recently and while the majority of people there remembered me and welcomed me, about a third of the bar hadn’t changed at all… My friend who was with me became uncomfortable and wanted to leave, but my sister made us stay there the whole night… As more people began to leave, the guys who wouldn’t even look at me started approaching me and asking how I was doing… One of them even apologised, but said he couldn’t have spoken to me in front of his work mates… Maybe one day I’ll go back there again… but it won’t anytime soon…
Thank you once again for a great site…
Luv and Hugs to Joel too…

But doesn’t this just tell the whole world that gay guys are efiminate? I go to sports bars all the time and my gay friends and I look just the other Jersey mooks in the video. Why did the gay couple have to play so queenie? C’mon ballons? Roses? Maybe they could have dressed in spandex and wore headbands too. I’m not sure what this video proves other than the world believes the standard stereotype of a gay man.

How so? Just because the guys in THIS video are, doesn’t mean all are.
The point of the balloons and roses was to show that they were clearly a couple and they were being romantic with each other unequivocally.
The couple wasn’t PLAYING queenie. They were a real couple. They were real people.
I’m sorry if you have low tolerance for femininity.

I was shocked to see more people defend the gay couple than I was expecting. I wasn’t surprised by the black lady in the store though. Racism is still alive in kicking in America, unfortunately. And, in response to THOMMY about blacks being looked upon as bad tippers. Well, I am black myself and I’ve been in the restaurant business for years and yes, that stereotype is true. I’ve had black people come into places where I work and it’s not just the white servers that go “Oh, God” it’s the black servers too. But, I’ve come to realize that there are just as many other races that don’t tip well either. It just boils down to not being educated in the ways of how to tip. 18 to 20% is normal for a good server. I hate it when people tell me “you did a fantastic job” because I know that’s going to be a fucking verbal tip. And, I’m usually right, it ends up being like a 10% tip. I can’t pay my rent with “I”m a fantastic waiter”!!! Done and done.

thank you for this post….i am also a big fan of what would you do….and these kind of issues need to be put alight no matter what type of situation…..its nice to know that slowly but surely america is becoming more tolerant of us as an equal….and yes i completely agree that there are going to be those jackasses that never learn to coexist peacefully but the numbers have changed and this is good news

Nate,
This video does not promote the notion that all gay men are effeminate. The video was created as an experiment and to prove a point. How will straight people react in a situation where there are two gay men being affectionate towards one another in public. I too get mistaken for a straight guy whenever I’m out and about, and even in a situation where I’m with a friend or lover and we are being affectionate, it seems like a non issue b/c we can both “pass.” but the fact of the matter is, some people in our community are more effeminate than others, and they have a much harder time. So it was important for the couple in this video to be a little more obvious in order for it to have the desired effect. Sadly, your post proves the problem that people have inside as well as outside the community with feminine guys. And that’s the real problem.

Adrian hit another issue right on the nose. I find it sad that the gay community demands respect and equal rights yet within our own community we dont do the same for each other! I’m personally not attracted towards effeminate men, and yes it does irk me sometimes when they really get into it.. but thats because of the issues with the rest of society and knowing it can draw the wrong kind of attention. But in order for the rest of society to be accepting of ALL levels of homosexuality a big step is that we within our own community do the same.

Dear Marlena and Adrian;
No, dears. These guys were playing queenie. Yes, they were a real couple but queenie all the way. That was the point. The producers put an effeminate gay male couple in a sports bar to see what would happen. This wasn’t a gay couple intended to blend in. They were designed to stick out. The behavior, the roses, balloons, feeding each other like mated doves – all over the top designed to get a reaction.
Also please don’t put words in my mouth. You don’t have the right to speak for me. I never said I had a low tolerance for feminity or a problem with feminine guys. You don’t have enough facts to pass judgment on me, nor should you.
And I will say it again: This video proves nothing more than most people are ready, willing and able to believe the commonly accepted stereotype of the effminate gay man just as much as the other video shows they are willing to believe the stereotype that black people are thieves and shoplifters.

“No, dears. These guys were playing queenie. Yes, they were a real couple but queenie all the way. ”
How do you figure they were “playing queenie”? How do you know this is not their normal behavior? You’re complaining about people not having enough facts to pass judgment on you, and yet at the same time YOU’RE assuming they’re playing up the feminine factor when you don’t know them either.
“The producers put an effeminate gay male couple in a sports bar to see what would happen. This wasn’t a gay couple intended to blend in. They were designed to stick out. The behavior, the roses, balloons, feeding each other like mated doves – all over the top designed to get a reaction.”
Of course they weren’t supposed to blend in. The point of the experiment was to see how people would react. But whether it’s two effeminate gay men or two masculine straight men, gay PDA in public NEVER blends in. EVER.
“I never said I had a low tolerance for feminity or a problem with feminine guys.”
Of course you didn’t SAY IT. Just like white people rarely ever come out and say “I HATE BLACKS”. They just clutch their purses when they see one walking by. Your comments clearly showed that you have some sort of bias against gay men who are feminine, and you can deny it all you want, but you’d be lying.
“And I will say it again: This video proves nothing more than most people are ready, willing and able to believe the commonly accepted stereotype of the effeminate gay man”
And you really think the reaction would’ve been much different had the gay guys looked more like they did? If anything the reaction would’ve been MORE positive, because our society is even LESS tolerant of feminine gay men than it is of masculine ones.
Note how the homophobe (the real one) says he finds it DISGUSTING that they’re drinking cosmos.

Also, how did the other patrons know these two guys were gay? Did they wear buttons or pass out business cards? Could it not be assumed they were very close friends or maybe just eccentric?
The anger that should be expressed over this stunt is that the producers used a stereotype to manipulate reactions. Our community was wrongly categorized and people were manipulated and lead to a conclusion. Sure, one or two very visceral supporting reactions were noted. But overall was this a positive portrayal of acceptance? In my opinion, no.

This was my whole point. The flowers, the balloons, etc. –they wanted to make sure people unequivocally knew they were a couple.
“The anger that should be expressed over this stunt is that the producers used a stereotype to manipulate reactions. ”
Once again, I still don’t understand the problem. If they were two stereotypically masculine guys, people could complain the reaction might be different from the crowd if they were feminine. It sounds like you have a problem with stereotypically feminine gay guys more than anything else.
