SORRY – but there is an unfortunate low-class (to me) habit today of crediting a famous singer for a song, not the writers.
McPhee DOES steal Streisand’s interpretation, although with merely good results. I have seen Babs sing this one — if you had to only hear one song sung in your life, I vote for Barbra doing “Somewhere”. Her performance was transcendant.
In this case, shame on you — the song, from West Side Story, was written by GAY Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by GAY Stephen Sondheim.
Hey – KNOCK ME IF YOU LIKE, but I like to see Gay superstar composers credited on a Gay website, not left out.
And (sorry) I think a song belongs to the writers — if it said she sang Striesands VERSION of “Somewhere”, that would be cool. Babs would be the last to claim the song is hers — although I think she did it so well that other singers cant easily top her. Maybe I am just old, and young people leave out the word version, interpretation, etc — I was always proper to say “Cole Porter’s Night and Day” NEVER “Sinatra’s Night and Day”
And Kanerine is good, but merely good. Streisand, Bernstein, and Sondheim are immortals.
